Effects The Chip Industry!EU Plans To Legislate To Prohibit The Use Of "Permanent Chemicals"

Introduction: The European Union is brewing to launch legislation to disable tens of thousands of whole fluoroploxl and polyfluorohomane compounds (PFAS), which are known as permanent chemicals. It is reported that the five countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway have strongly supported this proposal. If the proposal is approved, it will be implemented as soon as 2026.PFAS is widely used. It is found in electronic equipment, wind turbine, solar panels, cosmetics, medical equipment, industrial equipment and cooking utensils, and it is very important for chip manufacturing.

After the news came out, the major European chip suppliers warned that if the ban was implemented, it would cause great interference to the industry.

Data show that because PFAS has extremely stable chemical structure and unique chemical characteristics, it has both waterproof and oil -proof, and has been very favored by manufacturers for a long time, including the number of cars, textiles, medical equipment and non -stick pots.In the process of production of 10,000 products, this chemical substance will be used. However, in recent decades, research has found that there is a high degree of correlation between PFAS and health risks such as cancer, hormone dysfunction, weakening immune system, and environmental destruction.

Five European countries, including Germany and the Netherlands, have proposed that the EU has gradually eliminated permanent chemicals. In a joint statement a few days ago, they stated that if the proposal was passed, it would become one of the biggest ban on chemicals in Europe.

In the long run, the use of PFAS from PFAS will reduce the number of PFAS in the environment, which will also make related products and processes safer to humans, and they added.

If this legislative proposal is approved, it will take effect in 2026.According to the draft proposal, once the ban takes effect, the transition time of related companies will be introduced from 18 months to 12 years to introduce PFAS alternatives, depending on the importance of related industries and the nature of alternatives. Some industries, such as medical equipment parts, will be allowed to have a transition period for up to 12 years, while other ordinary industries must be adjusted within 18 months.

In an industry list that may hurt bones under the ban on permanent chemicals, the chip industry is undoubtedly listed. Some local European chip suppliers have warned this week that the EU's practice of permanent chemicals' ban will cause extensive damage to the already intense semiconductor supply chain.

Chemours, the main supplier of high -end fluoride polymer, warns that these permanent chemicals are absolutely essential for semiconductor manufacturing and other extensive industries.

Donise Dignam, director of CHEMOURS high -performance materials, said that if we do not have these, there will be a very serious confusion worldwide. I can't imagine how you will have these (semiconductor) manufacturing processes.

After all, the above proposal also predicts that the use of permanent chemicals in the electronics industry will increase at a rate of 10%per year, which is mainly due to the rise of chip demand. With the expansion of chip manufacturers, some of the most critical PFAS have previously appeared in supply.

Some executives of semiconductor industry said that in the past two years, the price of PFAS derivatives, one of the most critical PFAS derivatives for chip manufacturing due to strong demand, has soared by 70%-80%.Although the chip industry is currently not dazzling, it is expected that the price will rise by 20%this year.

In fact, if the European Union really decided to implement the PFAS ban, some semiconductor industries and its supply chain are trying to include itself on a longer 12 -year transition list, not more urgent 18 months.

CHEMOURS's DIGNAM warns that regulators must consider the entire supply chain when considering the ban, because chips are crucial to everything from cars to mobile phones.Trying to control a type of chemicals is as difficult as trying to control diesel or olive oil.
